Maudie

This is a movie based on the true-life story of Maud Lewis, a Nova Scotian folk artist who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and who rose to national fame with the sale of her paintings recognized for its unique artistic expressiveness.

Maud falls in love with her employer an aggressive fish monger who employs her as a housekeeper. They live together and accommodate each other’s idiosyncrasies and marry eventually but their marriage is threatened by the increasing Media spotlight due to the popularity of Maud’s paintings.

This is a well-balanced film which portrays Maud’s disability with a sensitive touch avoiding any over dramatization. Sally Hawkins is brilliant and ably supported by Ethan Hawke in the lead roles.
